Newbie, Novice, Newcome, Neophyte

Just a girl trying to get involved in the wonderful world of Cosplay.

Backstory: my very first Con was April 19, 2014, at AwesomeCon in D.C.  it was, well, AWESOME!  I had one of the best times of my life.  I decided to go big and just dress up.

Hello Maleficent!

The most fun part of this costume for me was the makeup.  I'm such a whore for makeup so anytime i get to play around with it i'm delighted.

HOLY EYEBROWS BATMAN!

I bought the headpiece, bodysuit, long cape and capelette.  The tights, skirt, boots, belt I had.  Underneath the headpiece and around my neck are two cut up pieces of some old leggings.  i rigged it together to look like a open faced hood - neat with the headpiece on, not so neat with the headpiece off.  I sewed the long cape with the black collar and the caplette with the purple collar together at the collar seam.  Note to self, it is impossible to find a black bird/raven/anything of the sort in April.  It just doesn't exist.  Alas, I made the staff using a foam ball i painted neon green, a long wooden dowel i painted gold and an Easter bird that was originally yellow and pink, i painted black and the eyes the same green as the foam ball.  bada bing bada boom we have MALEFICENT.... MMMUUUAAAHHHHAHAHAHAHAA

I went into AwesomeCon just excited to dress up!  I had no idea there was a fantastical world awaiting me.  I'm a former theatre nerd and I have been dying to get back into it.  Community Theatre perhaps?  I had so many people ask me if they could take a picture of me or with me.  of course i said YES! I was ecstatic with the response i got to Maleficent.  I felt a little awkward when a mother would ask me if her daughter could take a picture with me, HELLO BOOBAGE! I know the bodysuit was scandalous... eek.  My sweet and loving partner in crime (hereinafter "PIC"), bless his heart, ended up being my professional handler.  It got to a point where he would see someone approaching me and his hand was out for me to give him my purse.  He dressed up, kind of, if a Superman shirt counts... OH OH he also wore a Superman ring.  In his defense he is not into costumes as I am.  But he is as nerdy as they come and I love him.

My Man!!! My Superhero!

Probably the only one that could make Maleficent smile!
(who am I kidding, could you tell how excited i was!?)

So PIC joined me in my very first Con, and I'm so happy to have experienced it with him.  We saw (from afar) Ernie Hudson (who you gonna call?), Danai Gurira (MICHONNE!!!!), Melissa McBride (CAROL!!!), 2 power rangers (GO GO POWER RANGERS!), Nicholas Brendan (TEAM XANDER!), Sean Astin (RUDY! RUDY! RUDY! & GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!) and a few more amazeballs peops.  We walked artists alley and i was blown away with the talent.

So now that i have experienced my very first Con and attempted my very first Cosplay (although to be honest i had NO idea that is what i was doing), I am ADDICTED! I'm feinding for the next Con, the next costume, the next place to meet artists!  I've already sketched out 4 future Cosplay ideas.  It is taking over my life and i couldn't be happier!

Legal Assistant by day, nerdy girl by night (and weekends, and free time).  I am really looking forward to creating, imagining, acting, and just being myself, comfortable with the fact that i'm almost 31 years old and I am PROUD to be obsessed with graphic novels and books and movies and comics, etc...

I am inviting you all to join me in my adventure!  If you are an experienced Cosplayer and have any advice, tips, constructive criticism, PLEASE e-mail me.  I am a sponge and i just want to learn!!! If you are a neophyte like me, e-mail me as well! we can geek out in excitement!

DEFY GRAVITY!,

Wicked eLCee

side note: My Cosplay name is inspired by the Wizard of Oz and everything to do with it! I'm obsessed!  Wicked the musical, Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked novel, L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz novels, the original Wizard of Oz movie - i mean EVERYTHING - so Wicked it is!  In Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked", he came up with the name Elphaba by smushing the phonetic sounds of L. Frank Baum's initials (LFB - el-fa-ba)  so I took that idea and smushed the phonetic sounds of my first name and middle name initial (LC - el-cee)  <-- see what i did there!
